A state-of-the-art water treatment plant for Carlsberg

In 2020, Pantarein Water designed and built a cutting-edge water treatment plant for the Carlsberg brewery in Fredericia, Denmark. Capable of treating 750,000 m³ of wastewater per year, it stands as one of our largest and most visionary projects—earning the title of Most Innovative Water Treatment of 2021.

From wastewater to drinking water quality

The plant operates in multiple treatment stages for maximum sustainability:

  • Anaerobic treatment: breaks down organic matter while producing biogas.
  • MBR with Blue Foot Membranes: among the most compact and energy-efficient filtration membranes.
  • Reverse osmosis and remineralization: elevate the treated water to drinking water standards.

This allows up to 90% of water to be reused in the brewing process, significantly reducing resource usage and environmental footprint. Click here to find out more about water reuse and reverse osmosis.

Biogas powers green savings

In addition to water reuse, the facility produces 1.5 million m³ of biogas annually, which is used onsite to generate sustainable heat—contributing to up to 12% energy savings within the brewery.
