Haacht Brewery commits to sustainable water management

Haacht Brewery is a proudly Belgian, independent and family-run brewery. Their passion for beer goes hand in hand with a strong focus on sustainability. Back in the 1990s, they were among the first companies to invest in water treatment. Their progressive approach led to the installation of a unitank, a choice that supported a sustainable water policy for decades.

In 2021, Pantarein Water was called in to map the water flows within the brewery. This audit formed the basis for a master plan to improve water management and make it even more sustainable. The first phase of this plan was implemented in 2023 and included some crucial improvements, such as:

  • Remote automation and monitoring: through smart technologies and monitoring, we increased the efficiency of water treatment.
  • Renewal of sludge dewatering: this process was modernized to improve operation and reduce operational costs.
  • Replacement of surface aerators with fine bubble aeration: we achieved significant energy savings with this technology.
  • Conversion of the original treatment to a membrane bioreactor, which increases the treatment efficiency and clearly improves water quality.

Today, Pantarein Water and Haacht Brewery continue to work together on improving water quality and shared monitoring of the water treatment plant. Plans for the next phase are already in place, with the installation of an anaerobic treatment plant that will allow biogas valorization. Buffer tanks and a calamity tank will also be installed to complete the plant.
