What started in 2005 as purely an advisory role of Pantarein Water for Renewi, then still under the name Van Gansewinkel Group, has grown over the years into the engineering, expansion and operation of a leading water treatment plant at the Braine-le-Château (BE) site.
In 2005 Pantarein Water was asked to review Renewi's existing water treatment plant in Braine-le-Château. After a thorough study, the control system was optimized and the purification system was expanded with a high-performance cross-flow membrane filtration system, doubling the capacity of the water purification system.
A master plan was then drawn up for the engineering and construction of a new wastewater treatment plant that had to comply with new, stricter legislation for, among other things, COD (Chemical Oxygen Demand). The final construction of the new treatment plant started in 2012 and was delivered in 2013.
This new project took into account things like sophisticated membrane filtration and an eye for automation. Moreover, the new treatment plant is very compact and fully enclosed. Online measurements of ammonium and COD, among others, provide quality monitoring for Renewi. In a later phase, nanofiltration was installed; this advanced technique concentrates the non-degradable COD and increases the efficiency of the activated carbon filters, allowing a significant reduction in operational costs.
To this day, there is strong cooperation between Renewi and Pantarein Water. We continue to innovate together in the field of water treatment, for example in the innovation project ‘Micropolar’, where the focus is on the removal of micropollutants from wastewater. In time, this itself may make the use of activated carbon filters unnecessary, which translates into a further reduction in operational costs for our partners.
